DEMIURGE, Demurgus (from ὄντος, people, and ἔργον, work), literally signifies a handicraftsman; but in the language of the Platonists it was used to denote an exalted and mysterious agent, or Alion, employed by the Supreme Deity in the creation of the universe. The Platonizing Christians regarded the Logos, or Second Person of the Trinity, as one of an infinite series of Demiurgi employed by the Deity in the creation of the universe.
