DHAR, in Hindustan, a town, the principal place of the raj or petty native state of the same name, is situate 33 miles west of the British military station of Mhow, in the territory of Indore. It is defended by a fort erected on an eminence rising 40 feet above the plain. The raj, of which this town is the capital, contains an area of 1070 square miles, and a population of 104,860. By the provisions of a treaty concluded in 1819, Dhar was taken under the protection of the British government; in return for which the rajah ceded certain tributes, and moreover entered into the usual engagements of subordinate co-operation and friendly alliance. The town of Dhar has an elevation of 1908 above the level of the sea, and is situated in Lat. 22.35., Long. 75.20. (E. T.)
