CLOUD, St, a town of France, department of Seine-et-Oise, on the left bank of the Seine, and on the Paris and Versailles railway, 5 miles W. of Paris. Pop. 3051. It is celebrated for its park and palace, and is much resorted to by visitors from Paris. The palace consists of a front and two wings, inclosing three sides of a square, the fourth side being formed by a terrace and balustrade, commanding a magnificent view. The interior is handsomely furnished, and contains marble statues, vases, and paintings. The finest apartment is the Salon de Mars. The orangery is remarkable as being the place where the Council of the Five Hundred held their sittings when expelled by Napoleon and his armed grenadiers in 1799. The park is of great extent, and beautifully adorned with cascades and waterworks, which play on the first and third Sunday of every month. The Grand Jet d'Eau ejects a column of water to the height of more than 100 feet, and discharges 5000 gallons per minute. A fair held here, beginning on the 7th September and lasting for three weeks, is one of the most celebrated and frequented of all the fêtes near Paris. St Cloud is a favourite summer residence of the French court.
