COMPOSTELLA, ST JAMES OF, or ST JAMES OF THE SWORD, an ancient order of knighthood in Spain, founded either towards the close of the twelfth or in the beginning of the thirteenth century. It is the chief of the four military orders, namely, Compostella, Calatrava, Alcántara, and Manresa. This order received its rules of government from Pope Alexander III. See SANTIAGO.
