CONSOLE, in Architecture, a projecting bracket, usually in the form of the letter S. Consoles are often placed as ornaments on the side of door-cases. In Vitruvius, the terms ancon (ἄγκων) and prothyris (πρόθυρίς) appear to be other names for the same thing. See ARCHITECTURE, vol. iii., p. 508.
