CONTRITION (Lat. contritio, from conterere, to break or bruise), among divines, is used to denote that sincere sorrow for sin resulting from the reflection of having offended an infinitely holy and benevolent God, and attended with a sincere resolution of reformation. It is distinguished from attrition, which is applied to grief for sin arising from fear of punishment—the lowest degree of repentance.
