CREMONA, a province of Austrian Lombardy, lying north of the Po, which separates it from Parma and forms its boundary on the south: on the north it has the province of Brescia, east that of Mantua, and west that of Milan. It is about 45 miles in extreme length, and 15 in breadth; containing 523 square miles, and (1851) 204,558 inhabitants. The surface is level, and the soil very fertile, producing abundant crops of wheat, rice, maize, and flax. Horses and black cattle are numerous, and silk is an extensive production, but the sheep are few. There are no important manufactures carried on except the spinning of silk.
