GLAUCUS, a fisherman of Antheion in Æcota, who became a sea-god by eating part of the divine herb which Cronos had sown. A general belief prevailed in Greece that Glaucus every year, accompanied by marine monsters, visited all the coasts and islands, and delivered his prophecies. Fishermen and sailors especially were attentive to his oracles, in which they placed implicit confidence. He is said to have instructed even Apollo in the prophetic art. The stories about his various loves were favourites with the poets, but the place of his abode varied according to local traditions.
