ALCINOUS, a mythical king of the Phrygians, in the island of Scheria or Drepane, which it would be difficult to identify with any modern island, was son of Nausithous, and grandson of Neptune and Periboea. This king has been immortalised in the Odyssey. He received Ulysses with much civility, when a storm had cast him on his coast. His people loved pleasure and good cheer, yet were skilful seamen; and Alcinous is described as a good prince.
