ALGHISI, Tommaso, an eminent Italian surgeon, especially celebrated as a lithotomist. He was born at Florence in 1669, and died in 1713. He studied anatomy under Lorenzo Bellini, and surgery under his father, who was surgeon to the hospital of Sta Maria Nuova, at Florence. In 1703, he received his degree of Doctor at Padua, from the celebrated Vallisnieri. He afterwards became professor of surgery in his native town. His work, entitled Litotomia, ovvero del cavar la Pietra, published at Florence in 1707, and at Venice in 1708, with plates by himself, describes his treatment of lithotomy.—Mazzuchelli Scritt. d'Italia.
