ALMERIA, the capital of the above province, is situated on a rocky promontory near the Cabo de Gata, and from the strength of the port was deemed by the Moorish kings of Granada the most valuable of their fortresses and commercial ports; from whence their cruisers overawed the Catalans and Italians, and the merchants conveyed their various merchandise to Africa, Egypt, and Syria. Almería is the see of a bishop, and has a splendid cathedral. Its exports consist chiefly of lead, esparto, and barilla; its imports of woollen, cotton, linen, silk, and hardware. Pop. 18,000.
