ALPHÆUS, or CLEOPHAS, father of James the Less, and husband of Mary the sister of our Lord's mother; for which reason James is called "the Lord's brother." It would seem that Alphæus was his Greek, and Cleophas, or rather Clopas, his Hebrew, or Syriac name. Compare John xix. 26, with Luke xxiv. 10, and Matt. x. 3.
