ALTELAND, a district in the province of Bremen, in the kingdom of Hanover, denominated a royal justiceship, königliche Gerichte. It is situated on the banks of the Elbe, and is divided into three portions by the small rivers Schwinge, Este, and Lule, which cross it. The extent is
79 square miles, or 50,560 acres. The soil is peculiarly fertile. The inhabitants amount to 15,000, mostly living on separate farms, in prosperous circumstances. As a part of the ancient duchy of Bremen, the district possesses some peculiar privileges.
