ACONITI, in Antiquity, an appellation given to some of the Athletæ, but differently interpreted. Ακονιτι, adv. signifies literally without dust (α, priv. and κόνος); and probably was used of a victory obtained without difficulty, or when none dared to oppose an athlete on account of his strength and skill. Paus. vi. 7, § 2; Hor. Epist. i. 1. 51.
