ABANA, or AMANA, and PHARPAR, are called "rivers of Damascus" in 2 Kings v. 12. The main stream by which Damascus is now irrigated is called Barrada (the ancient Chrysorrhoas), and it seems probable that this was the ancient Pharpar: the Abana has been sought in
Abancay its subsidiary streams, and also in the Fijih, a deep, rapid stream, which falls into the Barrada 15 or 20 miles N.W. of Damascus. See DAMASCUS.
