NEWTON, a township of England, county of Chester, situated on the slope of a hill, 8 miles E. by S. of Manchester, and 5½ N.E. of Stockport. It has a parish church in the Norman style, two Methodist churches, and several schools. The manufacture of cotton is carried on here, and employs the greater part of the population. Pop. (1851) 7481.
