NEWTON-STEWART, a market-town of Scotland, county of Wigtown, on the right bank of the Cree, which is here crossed by a bridge of five arches, 7 miles N. by W. of Wigtown. It has a good town-hall; a large Gothic parish church; Free, United Presbyterian, Reformed Presbyterian, and Roman Catholic churches; and several schools. The inhabitants are employed to a large extent in the lead mines which are worked in the neighbourhood; and brewing, tanning, the manufacture of woollen and cotton stuffs, and the curing of bacon, are carried on in the town.
