NOSSI-BE, or Nos-Bei, an island in the Indian Ocean, in front of the Bay of Passandava, on the N.W. coast of Madagascar; S. Lat. 13. 20., E. Long. 48. 20. It is irregular in outline and surface, and evidently of volcanic formation. The land near the sea is well cultivated, and produces rice, maize, potatoes, &c., more than enough for the inhabitants. At several places on the coast excellent anchorage may be obtained. Nossi-Be belongs to the French, being a dependency of the Island of Bourbon. Pop. (1851) 15,178.
