NEJIN, or NEJIN, a town of Russia, in the government of Tchernigov, stands on the Oster, 49 miles S.E. of Tchernigov, and 475 S.W. of Moscow. It is well built, and surrounded by earthen ramparts; and contains a castle, a cathedral, numerous other churches, a convent, a school, and an hospital. There are manufactures of soap, leather, silks, perfumes, confectionary, liquors, &c. The town has also a considerable trade, the intercourse between the ports on the Baltic and Moldavia, Wallachia, and the Crimea being carried on through it. Three annual fairs are held here, and largely attended. Pop. (1849) 17,981.
