EOSTRE, a Saxon goddess to whom sacrifices were offered in the month called Eostra (April); and hence the name Easter, which the Saxons, after their conversion to Christianity, applied to the festival celebrated in commemoration of our Saviour's resurrection.

EPACT (επακτος, added), in Chronology, a term employed in the calendar to express the moon's age at the end of the year; or the excess of the solar month above the lunar synodical month, and of the solar year above the lunar year of twelve synodical months. See CALENDAR, vol. vi. p. 83, et seq.
