EXEGETES (from ἐξηγομαι, I explain), a Greek word signifying an interpreter or guide. At Athens, the Eumolpidae were designated exegetae, as the expounders of the sacred laws, rites, and customs. The term was afterwards applied also to those who acted as guides (ciceroni) to strangers visiting the most remarkable places in Greece.
