EXERGUE (Fr. from ἑξ and ἔργον work), in Numismatics, the lower part of the face of a coin or medal, when separated from the principal subject by a horizontal line which serves as a base to the subject. It usually contains some cipher, device, date, &c., to which also the same term is applied.
