EYEMOUTH, a small seaport and market town of Scotland, county of Berwick, situated at the mouth of the Eye, 7 miles north of Berwick. It is a place of considerable antiquity, and had a fort of great strength, which, however, has been destroyed. Being the Scottish harbour nearest to England, it was a place of importance in the wars between the two countries. In later times it was for many years famous for smuggling, but that illicit traffic has been long suppressed. The harbour has been much improved by the erection of a breakwater, and vessels may now enter and depart at all times of the tide. Eyemouth has a weekly grain market, and extensive granaries have been erected near the pier. Pop. of parish (1851) 1488, many of whom are engaged in the fisheries.
