FACULTY, in Law, a privilege granted to a person by favour or indulgence, to do that which by law he may not do. Thus the Archbishop of Canterbury has a court of faculties for granting certain privileges and dispensations; such as liberty to marry without the publication of bans, to ordain a deacon under age, &c.
