FAIR ISLE, one of the Shetland Islands, lying between that group and the Orkneys, and extending fully three miles in length by about two in breadth. The coast, which is abrupt and dangerous, is only accessible on the south-east side; and the hills which cover the interior are only useful as affording pasture for sheep. The inhabitants are very few in number.
