FALERNUS AGER, a district in the northern part of Campania, celebrated for its wine, which in the time of Horace was reputed the best of all the Italian wines. It included the country extending from the Massic Hills to the river Vulturinus; and when it passed into the hands of the Romans in 340 B.C., formed part of the Capuan territory. The Falernian wine so famous in the times of Horace had begun to degenerate before those of Pliny, in consequence of careless cultivation; and were supplanted in general estimation by those produced in the adjoining Ager Statanus.
