FARTHINGALE, a petticoat extended by hoops or circles of whalebone; and first worn, it is said, by pregnant women. The fashion was introduced into England in the reign of Queen Elizabeth; and the last remnant of it, namely the single hoop, only disappeared about the year 1820.
