FAT, an oily concrete substance, contained in the cells of the adipose or cellular membrane of animal bodies. See ANATOMY, ii. 787, and CHEMISTRY.

FAT also denotes a measure of capacity, but indefinite. Thus a fat of isinglass contains from 3½ cwt. to 4 cwt.; of yarn, from 220 to 221 bundles, &c.

FAT or TAT, a large wooden tub or vessel used in breweries and tanneries; also as a measure for malt, containing eight bushels.
