FÈRE, LA, a fortified town of France, in the department of Aisne, situated on an island of the Oise, near its confluence with the Serre, 16 miles N.W. of Laon. It has a large arsenal, a school of artillery, a powder mill, and salt-petre works. Pop. 3129. La Fère was taken by the allies on 24th February 1814.
