FLAIL, an instrument for threshing corn, consisting of the hand-staff, or piece held in the thresher's hand; the swible, or that part which strikes the corn; the caplins, strong leather thongs which unite the hand-staff and swible; and the middle-band, a leather thong or fish-skin that ties the caplins together.
