SALO, a town of Austrian Italy, Lombardy, in a beautiful region at the head of a bay of the same name on the west shore of the Lake of Garda, in the province and 15 miles E.N.E. of Brescia. It is well built, partly on piles, and contains several churches, a nunnery, school, theatre, and hospital. It is the seat of a court of justice, and has manufactures of thread and of silk, which are considered the best made in Italy. Groves of olives, oranges, citrons, and mulberries encircle the town, and the heights of Mount San Bartolomeo overhang it. Pop. (1846) 4531.
