SAVALL, an island in the South Pacific, the largest of the Navigator's or Samoan group. S. Lat. (of the southern point) 18. 49., W. Long. 172. 29. Its length is about 50 miles, and its breadth varies from 20 to 30. The structure is volcanic; and the surface rises gradually from the shore to the peaks, thrown up by extinct craters. One of these, near the centre, rises to the height of 4000 feet, and is conspicuous to a wide distance round about. The interior has never been explored. Savall enjoys a very fertile soil, which produces, without culture, coffee, sugar, indigo, and other plants. There is one safe harbour on the north shore. Pop. estimated at 20,000.
