HENGIST, the brother of Horsa, was the first Saxon chief who established himself in England. He reduced the south-eastern corner of the kingdom, and ruled over Kent under the title of king. He fixed his residence at Canterbury, where he died in A.D. 488. (See ENGLAND.)
