STAVROPOLE, a town of Russia, capital of a circle of the same name, in the province of Caucasus, stands on a hill near the Taschly, 59 miles W.N.W. of Alexandrov, and about 260 S.W. of Astrachan. It is fortified, and has several churches, a gymnasium, and manufactories of soap and leather. Pop. 7000.
