STEUBENVILLE, a town of the United States of North America, capital of Jefferson county, in the state of Ohio, on the Ohio, 35 miles W. by S. of Pittsburg. It occupies an elevated position, in the midst of a beautiful country, and contains county buildings, numerous churches, an academy and a school, two banks, and several newspaper offices. The manufactures of the town are extensive, including woollen and cotton fabrics, paper, glass, machinery, &c. There are also several iron-foundries and flour-mills. The whole manufactures employ more than 1000 hands. Pop. (1850) 6139.
