MONTARGIS, a town of France, capital of an arrondissement of the same name, in the department of Loir-et-Garonne, is situated on the Loing, 40 miles E.N.E. of Orleans. The town, which is partly walled, is well but irregularly built, and formerly contained a castle, which was entirely destroyed in 1809. Montargis has a church, two hospitals, and a theatre. Manufactures of cloth, leather, and paper are carried on here; and the town has a considerable trade in cattle, corn, honey, wax, leather, &c. Pop. 7757.
