MORADABAD, a town of Hindustan, and the principal place of the British district of the same name. It has considerably declined from its ancient consequence, having been the seat of a mint in which rupees were coined, which were current in Hindustan, until superseded by the new rupee of the East India Company. It is 838 miles N.W. from the city of Calcutta. The population, according to the latest official return, is 57,414, the majority of which is Mohammedan. The district of which this town is the chief place has an area of 2967 square miles, and a population of 1,138,461. The province was ceded to the East India Company in 1801 by the Nawaub of Oude.
