MORPHEUS, the god of dreams, is represented as the
son of Sleep. His office, as his name (a derivative of the
Greek word μυρσός) implies, was to construct visions in the
brain of the sleeper. He is painted in a reclining posture,
with a crown of poppies around his head. Ovid (Met. xi.
635) was the first who mentioned him.
