MILTON, or MILTON-ROYAL, a market-town of England, county of Kent, on an inlet of the channel between the Isle of Sheppey and the mainland, 11 miles N.E. of Maidstone, and 39 E. by S. from London. The town stands on the declivity of a hill, and is old and irregularly built, but it contains many good houses and cottages of recent erection. The inhabitants are principally engaged in the oyster fishery,—the "Milton natives" being in great demand in the London market. Some trade in corn and other agricultural produce is also carried on.
