ANCHUSA, a genus of plants of the natural order of Boragineæ. The most noted are A. officinalis, once used in medicine as a demulcent, and A. tinctoria, or alkanet, indigenous in the south of Europe, with a root that yields a fine red to alcohol, wax, and all sorts of oils.
