ATYS, or ATTYS, in Greek Mythology, a beautiful shepherd of Phrygia, beloved by Cybele, who emasculated himself during a fit of madness into which he had been thrown by that goddess in revenge for his infidelity to her. The story is related by Ovid, Past. iv. 221, and differently by other writers. In Pausanias (vii. 17, § 5) may be found the story of Atys killed by a wild boar.
