BESTIARI (βησταίροις), those who fought with wild beasts in the Roman circus, or who were exposed to them by a sentence of the law. The bestiarii multiplied greatly under the empire, were regularly trained, and fought for pay. They are always distinguished from the gladiators, who fought with each other.
