BETHSHAN, a town of Samaria, in the half-tribe of Manasseh, on the borders of Galilee, about two miles from Jordan, and eighteen from the southern end of lake Gennesareth. It was also called Scythopolis, and by Josephus is said to be the largest city of the Decapolis. Its site is occupied by the small village of Beisan.
