BISTRE (French bit, brown), a pigment of a brown transparent colour, which is best prepared from the soot of beech-wood, by boiling it in water (in the proportion of two pounds to a gallon) for half an hour. After standing to settle, and while still hot, the clearer part is poured off, and evaporated to dryness. The residuum is bistre.
