BLAZONRY, the art of deciphering coats of arms; and also that of expressing or describing a coat of arms in appropriate language. The term is said to be derived from the German blasen, to blow; it having been customary at jousts and tournaments for the herald to sound a trumpet when he proclaimed the arms of a knight on ushering him into the lists.
