AYTON, SIR ROBERT, a Scottish poet, was born at Kinaldie in Fife-shire, in 1570, and died at London in 1638. His Latin poems are to be found in the Delitiae Poet. Scot. Among these are various panegyric pieces, addressed to King James VI. and the members of the royal house, for which he was rewarded with substantial favours. An edition of the poems in the Scottish dialect generally supposed to be his, appeared in 1844, edited by Mr Charles Roger.
