ATHENS, the name of several towns and villages in the United States of America. The principal are, 1. the capital of a county of the same name in the S.E. of the state of Ohio, finely situated on the Hocking River, 40 miles from its mouth. It is the seat of the Ohio university and of an academy. Pop. 1593. 2. A town in the county of Clark, state of Georgia, on the W. bank of Oconee River. Pop. 3000. It contains the university of Georgia.
