BAMPTON, a market-town in Devonshire, hundred of Bampton, 164 miles from London, and 21 from Exeter. It formerly returned two members to parliament. Pop. of town and parish in 1851, 2102. Market-day Saturday. A great battle was fought here A.D. 614, between the West Saxons and Britons, in which the former were defeated.
