BARATARIA, an island in the Gulf of Mexico, at the entrance of the bay of the same name.

BARATHRUM (Βάραθρον, also called ὄργυια) in Antiquity, a deep dark pit at Athens, lined with sharp spikes, into which malefactors were cast. The κείδας or κείδας at Sparta was similar.
