BARI, the ancient Barium, capital of the above province, is situated on a tongue of land projecting into the Adriatic, in Lat. 41. 7. 41. N. Long. 16. 52. 16. E. The town is strongly fortified, but the houses are generally mean, and the streets narrow and filthy. It is the seat of an archbishopric, and has a cathedral, several parish churches, an old priory founded in 1087, a college for the education of nobles, a lyceum, a diocesan seminary, a theatre, arsenal, and several hospitals. The manufactures comprise cotton goods, cloth, hats, soap, glass, &c.; and the liquor called "acqua stomachica" is prepared here. The roads afford good anchorage, with a depth of from 16 to 18 fathoms, but the port is accessible to small vessels only. Pop. 20,000.
